Wainscoting is an application of wood molding up to the middle or lower half of a wall. Wainscoting is traditionally constructed from tongue-and-groove boards, though beadboard or decorative panels /such as a wooden door might have/ are also common. Wainscoting may also refer to other materials used in a similar fashion. Wainscoting as a type of old style wood paneling that doesn’t cover the entire height of the wall. It can be individual tongue and groove boards or raised panels. Wainscoting is trimmed out at the foot with baseboard and the top with chair rail or cap molding. Wainscoting is usually 36” or 48” high but in some historic installations was 6 or 8 foot high.
